Navajo Student Wins Highest National Honor for Young Poets Kinsale Hueston, a senior Navajo student in California, has been recognized for her poetry Tanya H. Lee • August 26, 2017 To say Navajo student Kinsale Hueston, 17, is an aspiring writer would be to miss the point. The senior at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in California is by any definition an accomplished poet who has just been named one of five National Student Poets for 2017, the nation’s highest honor for young poets. The National Student Poets Program is a project of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, which administers the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Navajo student will go to Washington, D.C., at the end of August for the official award ceremony at the Library of Congress. The weekend will include a private workshop with the 21st US Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera. Awar...

Heck, you might even own a shirt that has all three. Buffalos, hawks and deer also count. If you own shirts that look like these... You might be Native American. Brazilian Indigenous Win Supreme Court Victory to Keep Their Land In Mato Grosso The Federal Supreme Court ruled the lands are ‘immemorially indigenous’ and that Mato Grosso could not expropriate the lands Rick Kearns • August 30, 2017 On August 16, Brazil’s Supreme Court unanimously rejected a government-backed proposal that would have taken more land away from indigenous people based on a ‘Time frame’ (Marco Temporal) thesis that asserted indigenous people would not have rights to lands they hadn’t been occupying in 1988, the year of the country’s most recent constitution. Higher rates of poverty, substance abuse and exposure to trauma—historical or otherwise—are among the multiple risk factors for mental illness seen more commonly in indigenous communities compared to society as a whole. That data bears out the nine counties within the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes’ jurisdictional area. Prior to its launch, Cheyenne and Arapaho youth were nearly twice as likely to be arrested for an alcohol-related offense than a non-Native teen in three of the nine counties. Despite initial hesitation from students, parents and school administrators, the SAMHSA-funded program has become more popular, thanks to a steady stream of activities, including beading classes, a Color Run and a community buffalo butchering session. Since the program’s implementation in 2014, the rates of alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use have dropped among Cheyenne and Arapaho youth. The alcohol use rate alone has decreased almost 20 percent in less than three years from 45.3 percent in 2014 to 2...
