The Blight of the American Chestnut, Visions from Lakota Elders, and Harvesting Salmon in Bristol Bay
Dear Friend,
Shekóli. Did you know that the Chestnut blight was one of the most tragic environmental disasters of the modern age decimating millions upon millions of trees, and that it changed the landscape of Indian country and beyond forever? Or that this summer saw one of the largest harvests of salmon from Bristol Bay in recent memory, allowing Alaska Natives to harvest nature’s bounty in one of the last pure watersheds on earth? Or that one of the most well-known stories from Lakota Elders known as the Black Snake Prophecy is dangerously close to being completely fulfilled?

Here's what you'll find in our third issue…
The Magnificent One — After years of bigotry and neglect, Native actors are landing prominent roles in everything from super-hero blockbusters to intense, small films. Martin Sensmeier, who got his big break last year in The Magnificent Seven and has a featured role in this month’s gritty thriller, Wind River, shares what brought him from Alaska to Hollywood, and what it means to give back.
The Life and Death (and Life) of the American Chestnut — The Chestnut blight was one of the most tragic environmental disasters of the modern age decimating millions upon millions of trees, and changed the landscape of Indian country and beyond forever. Now efforts to restore a Native giant offer promise for other threatened species.
A Dynamic Dynasty — With deep Nez Perce roots, JoAnn Kauffman and her family have left their mark. For a project about leading citizens by Legacy Washington and the office of the Washington Secretary of State, Kauffman relates the history of her ancestors and famous siblings, and offers a peek into her family photo album as well.
Weaving the Past into the Present — Basketmaker Leah Brady from the Elko Band of the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone can weave baskets so tightly crafted they hold water or the tiny seeds of desert plants, a dietary staple. In her work and her teaching, she perpetuates the never-ending story of her people and her craft.
Sustenance and Subsistence in Bristol Bay — Talk about photos you’ll never forget: This summer saw one of the largest harvests of salmon from Bristol Bay in recent memory. With sockeye salmon running strong, Alaska Natives harvested nature’s bounty in one of the last pure watersheds on earth in an annual event that they say feeds body and soul.
Winter Count: Lakota Magic Show — Visions from Lakota elders have passed down the generation, and have proven eerily prescient. Sadly, one of the most well-known stories known as the Black Snake Prophecy is dangerously close to being completely fulfilled. Words and illustration by Marty Two Bulls, Sr.
Storyteller Eyes — This past July, Walter Lamar attended North American Indian Days In Browning, Montana while his son Wasey Lamar traveled to the Mandree Powwow in Mandree, North Dakota. Both had cameras in hand. Both are gifted photographers with distinct styles and visions, and this edition’s photo gallery is a study in form and content.
