Earlier this week, for the 16th straight year, the Cherokee Nation received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, and also the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting award for the fifth consecutive year. The awards are the highest honors given to governments for stellar financial reporting and accounting by the Government Finance Officers Association. To earn the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) award, an impartial panel of judges reviewed an audit of the tribe’s 2016 fiscal year financial operations and all its businesses and nonprofit components, ensuring they met the highest standards, including transparency.
Lastly, Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker delivered testimony Wednesday before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs. Baker urged subcommittee members to push forward H.R. 2606, the Stigler Act Amendments. If passed, the legislation would remove provisions that prevent a Native American from inheriting land within the Five Tribes in restricted fee if he or she is below one-half certificate degree of Indian blood.
